Background, training and areas of expertise are extremely important when choosing your therapist. I have an extensive background in trauma informed care and recovery; couples and family therapy; addiction, anxiety and depression in individuals. My modality of therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, (EFT) for couples is empirically based and offers long lasting change when implemented. In addition, I am an attachment based therapist which the client-therapist relationship is based on developing or rebuilding trust and centers on expressing emotions. An attachment-based approach to therapy looks at the connection between an infant’s early attachment experiences with primary caregivers, usually with parents, and the infant’s ability to develop normally and ultimately form healthy emotional and physical relationships as an adult. Attachment-based therapy aims to build or rebuild a trusting, supportive relationship that will help prevent or treat anxiety or depression. I proudly hold the following certification or association membership:

  • American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy
  • Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
  • Registered Play Therapist
  • Association for Sandtray Therapy
  • Commission on Association for Marriage and Family Therapy Education
  • Certified Sex Therapist

My Story

My name is Carolyn S. Riviere. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Registered Play Therapist TM (RPT), and a Certified Sex Therapist. My focal modality of expertise and training is in Emotional Focused therapy, attachment based therapy and trauma informed care and recovery modalities of therapeutic interventions. I also have completed the training curriculum for a CACIII addiction certificate, working with individuals, couples and families struggling with a variety of addiction issues.

My undergraduate degree is in Business Administration, concentration in Marketing and a second major in Psychology. After spending 27 years climbing the corporate Fortune 500 ladder with organizations such as Xerox, SUN, Oracle and IBM, in a variety of Sales and technical positions, I have now combined my career and life experiences into my private practice of helping individuals, couples and families obtain work and family balance, recovery from childhood or adult trauma and addictions.

I am also a mom to a 27 year old son, 31 year old daughter and 10 year old granddaughter. My life journey has included single parenting, marriage, remarriage, divorce, major illness and recovery, midlife career change, trauma, discrimination in the work force, on and off the “mommy track”, coaching and mentoring thru and up the corporate ladder of organizations while balancing home and health, and launching several successful businesses including a therapy practice which has been my passion in life.

Training, Certificates, And Supervision

Background, training and areas of expertise are extremely important when choosing your therapist. I have an extensive background in trauma informed care, couples and family therapy, sexuality and addiction. All of this background is supported by the most empirically based therapy modality, EFT (Emotionally Focused Therapy) for couples, individuals and family all deeply entrenched in attachment theory which places the individual in the context of his or her closest relationships.  An attachment pattern  or bond, is vitally important to our survival and thriving in relationships and how we emotionally regulate within ourselves and within relationships.

In addition, from an individual standpoint, most of my training’s and career experience and expertise has focused on the  individual and the impact the individual has in relationships, couples and family systems.
